New Publication: Earth System and Planetary Boundaries

We know what safe Earth system and planetary boundaries are– scientifically defined limits within which humanity can operate safely to maintain a stable and resilient planet. But we also know that what is safe for people and the planet may not always be just. Access to a livable planet is uneven and often undemocratic.

In this new paper Dr. Lauren Gifford co-authored with a number of Earth Commission colleagues, documented the process of defining ‘no significant harm’ within an Earth system boundaries framework, and asked how ‘just’ boundaries might be defined, their implications, and how many of the global population might be at risk when boundary thresholds are crossed.
